Surgeon burnout could be putting you at risk

On Behalf of Patrick Flynn, Attorney at Law | Apr 28, 2022 | Medical Malpractice

When you’re set to undergo a surgical procedure, you might find yourself battling butterflies in your stomach. Still, most people who find themselves in this situation put their mind at ease by remembering that surgeons are extensively educated and trained before being turned loose to perform their duties without supervision. In far too many instances, sadly, that trust is misplaced. Unfortunately, even well-trained and experienced surgeons can make serious mistakes.

Surgeon burnout a bigger problem than many may think

One reason is because surgeons, just like people in other professions, are subject to burnout. Burnout occurs when you reach a point of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion caused by an extended period of stress.

The problem is noticeable in the medical field. In fact, one screening tool found that 40% of surgeons responded positive for burnout. Another study found that burnout amongst medical professionals as a whole has affected more than 50% in the profession.

Why does this matter?

Simply put, burned out surgeons are more likely to make mistakes. Their mental energy is diminished, and they are more easily distracted. They may be more tired and fatigued, which can lead to unexpected errors. This can put a patient at significant risk of being harmed by medical malpractice.

What can be done?

The medical profession is trying to remedy the issue on its own by working toward greater work-life balance and improved morale, but it’s not enough. That’s why if you or a loved one has been harmed by medical malpractice, then you should think about taking action to find accountability. If you’d like to learn more about how to do that and position yourself for recovering the compensation that’s needed, then please think about reaching out to a firm that is experienced and proven in this area of the law.
